Holding Unto God’s Word As Life – Benny Shobo

Reading Time: 5 minutes

When the word of God becomes life to you, it means that you are abiding and living in the word of God. The word of God is life and health to all who make it a priority and final law in their hearts and lives. Proverbs 3:8, “This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones”. Holding unto the word of God, requires us to apply faith in our situations, and believe beyond all doubt that God’s grace is sufficient for us. God is delighted when He sees us clinging to His word regardless of our challenges, knowing that His word causes Him to act on our behalf because we believe that with Him, all things are possible indeed.

The word of God is more than able to deliver us every time, especially when we stand firmly on God’s word and promises to us who are the Believers in Christ. If we do not hold on firmly to the word of God especially in the times of trials, we will not only crumble, but we would not be able to withstand the powers of the devil. When we stand firmly on the words and promises of God, we are making a bold statement to the devil our sworn enemy, that we trust in the power of God’s word; that God will never leave nor forsake us at the time of our need.

When we hold unto to God’s word firmly and are unmoved, we activate the power of God, and this gives God the authority to come into our challenging situations and deliver us completely. We must not waiver when holding unto the word of God, instead, we should remain focused, encouraged and strong in faith. If we waiver, the devil will only be too pleased to see our lack of faith in God’s word; and that is the opportunity he seeks after to attack us. 1 Peter 5:8, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour”.

In Matthew 14:22-33, we see how Peter walked on water. In this story, Peter was able to walk on water because He believed Jesus, however, he began to sink in the water when he was distracted by the circumstances that surrounded him on every side. All it took for him to sink, was a brief moment away from Jesus as his focus. Peter was moved by the challenges around him and not by the word of God through faith. Praise God that Jesus rescued him, but Jesus taught Peter and us a profound lesson in that story. The lesson was for Peter and all Believers in Christ, to make Jesus our only mirror and focus. When our focus is in the word of God, we usher in the miracles of God upon our lives because miracles, deliverance and victories are born when we make the word of God our only focus. Hebrews 12:2, “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God”.

The key to holding on and standing firmly on God’s word, is in our complete trust in the power of God’s word. This requires us to know the word of God, apply the word of God that you know and do not doubt. The word of God is our weapon, which requires us to pull on boldly the whole armour of God. With this Armour, we can effectively withstand and triumph over our enemies through faith. Ephesians 6:10-17, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore, put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled round your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God”.

Now, prayer is very essential when it comes to us firmly holding unto God’s word effectively. We must back our faith with prayers because when we pray, we activate the power in God’s word, and this tremendous power is made available for us to use rightly. As Believers in Christ, our prayers are not ordinary because through the Holy Spirit in us, we declare the mysteries of the power of God’s word. James 5:16, “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective”.

When we effectively and consistently pray to God using His word, we edify, empower and equip ourselves with the anointing of God. We must remember that it is by the grace of God that we are able to stand firmly on God’s word and promises, and not by our might or power. However, when we prayerfully and firmly hold unto the word of God and are not deterred, we remain over-comers, triumphant and successful in all that concerns us.

10 REASONS WHY WE SHOULD HOLD UNTO THE WORD OF GOD

1.   The word of God will save and deliver us. 1 John 2:14, “I have written to you, young men, because you are strong and the word of God abides in you and you have overcome the evil one.

2.    The word of God is alive, true and powerful. Hebrews 4:12, “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart”.

3.    They are God’s promises to us. 2 Corinthians 1:20, “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God”.

4.    It is our effective weapon against the devil. Ephesians 6:17, “Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God”.

5.    It is life and health to us. Proverbs 3:8, “This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones”.

6.    The word of God builds, shapes and strengthens us. Acts 20:32, “And now I commit you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up”.

7.    The word of God is eternal and not subject to change. 1 Peter 1:25, “But the word of the Lord endures forever.” And this is the word that was preached to you”.

8.     It is our hope, rest, solace and fortress. Psalm 91:2, “I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress,

My God, in whom I trust

9.    Jesus is the Word of God. John 1:1, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God”.

10.   The word of God guides and inspires us. Timothy 3:16-17, “All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for conviction, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, fully equipped for every good work”.
