Divine elevation is always preceded by a season of testing. Every chosen vessel must endure these trials to develop the character, humility and faith required to handle divine responsibilities. Passing these tests determines whether we are truly ready to step into our destinies. When God takes an interest in a person, He meticulously and purposefully trains them through diverse and difficult tests. God may test anyone in different ways, but He will not enforce His will upon those who are deliberately defiant and disobedient. We must pass each of these tests before we can be promoted by God; otherwise, we may continue repeating them until we finally pass. Job 23:10: “But he knows the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.”
1. The Test of Isolation (The Wilderness Season): The key to passing this test is to be patient with God and not emerge from the wilderness before He releases us. A season of isolation strips away comforts and removes human dependencies so that the vessel learns to rely entirely upon God. The enemy will do all he can to frustrate, tempt, lure and distract us from continuing steadfastly with God in this hidden season, but we must endeavour to remain wise and stay put until God elevates and announces us, just as He did with Joseph, David, Moses, Esther, John the Baptist, Jesus and Paul. During this test, God may intentionally remove certain friendships, networks or comfort zones that would hinder our next spiritual level. The purpose of this isolation is for God to grow, refine, develop and equip us to fulfil His divine will at the appointed time. Premature exposure can ultimately destroy the purpose of God in our lives, just as a seed exposed directly to the sun will wither and die. Do not allow the applause of the crowd to lure you away from the wilderness season, for it is often the same crowd that will forsake you when you fall short, as they did with Moses, David and Jesus. 2 Corinthians 6:17: “Therefore, ‘Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you.'”
2. The Test of Faith: God will test whether we trust Him completely and have confidence in His Word and promises. A life of faith is forged in absolute dependence upon the pure, unalterable and all-powerful Word of God. When God tests our faith, He provides the help and strengthening of the Holy Spirit. We must also remain prayerful and continue in fasting. The aim of this test is to ensure that we grow into the fullness of His divine purpose for our lives. The key to passing this test is our ability to hold firmly to God, His Word and His promises without wavering, whilst relying on the Holy Spirit despite every challenge we may encounter. James 1:3-4, “Because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. Also in Hebrews 11:6, “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him”.
3. The Test of Allegiance to God: This test requires the surrender of personal desires, pride and ego in order to yield entirely to God’s direction. It involves standing by a person, ministry or vision when it is unpopular, difficult or under intense spiritual attack. It focuses on standing firm against spiritual opposition and walking in the Spirit rather than relying on the flesh. Joshua 24:24, “And the people said to Joshua, “The Lord our God we will serve, and his voice we will obey.” Also in Luke 16:13, “No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”
4. The Test of Love for God and Others: Also known as the Love Test, this is a spiritual self-evaluation based on the commands to love God and to love our neighbour as ourselves. It measures our faith through our actions, patience and treatment of others, even those who are difficult or unkind. Love for God is demonstrated through obedience and delighting in His will, whilst love for others requires active kindness, patience and humility. The aim of this test is to evaluate the depth and capacity of our love. During this test, our patience, humility, selflessness, forgiveness and commitment to truth and peace are all examined. Love for God naturally overflows into the way we treat people.
5. The Test of Discouragement: There will be seasons of discouragement and diverse trials that seek to dampen our faith in God, His Word and His promises. Joseph received promises from God through dreams, yet he still faced betrayal and conspiracy. During this test, we must press forward in faith when opposition arises and the vision appears delayed or abandoned by others. The aim of this test is to assess our trust in God irrespective of our circumstances. God watches to see whether we will continue to believe His Word without wavering. The key to overcoming this trial is to remain focused on God, His Word and His promises whilst leaning entirely upon the comfort, strength and guidance of the Holy Spirit.
6. The Test of Knowledge of God’s Word (The Word Test): This test involves overcoming adversity by applying and standing upon God’s spoken and written Word even when physical circumstances contradict it. It measures a believer’s reliance upon Scripture and commitment to aligning life with God’s will rather than human desires. 2 Timothy 2:15, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth”.
7. The Test of Service: God will test our humility and sincerity in serving Him and others. The aim of this test is to produce faithfulness, joy in all circumstances and a servant-hearted spirit. God desires us to submit to the Holy Spirit and to those He has placed in authority, even honouring flawed or difficult leaders in order to demonstrate respect for God-ordained authority. We look to Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith, who humbly washed His disciples’ feet. Misunderstanding and false accusations may arise during this season, as they did with Daniel and Joseph. We may experience false judgement, lack of support and isolation without retaliating or compromising. Faithfulness in small and seemingly menial tasks is tested before greater responsibilities are entrusted to us. The key to passing this test is to remember that all we do is for the glory of God and not for the applause of men. Matthew 20:26 “Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant”. Also, Matthew 20:28 “just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
8. The Test of Faithfulness: God will test how faithful and committed we are to the assignment He has entrusted to us. He tests whether we will be slothful or diligent. Faithfulness means giving God our best in all that He has placed in our care. Joseph remains a great example of faithfulness both to God and to his earthly masters. The key to passing this test rests in our reverence and loyalty to God, trusting that He rewards those who diligently seek Him. Luke 16:10 “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much”.
9. The Test of a Giving Heart: A giver is one who delights in giving to God and to others. A giving heart is characterised by joy rather than obligation, pressure or regret. A true giver delights in the act of giving because cheerful generosity reflects the very character of God. The aim of this test is to evaluate the posture of our hearts and the motives behind our giving. The posture of the heart matters far more than the size of the gift. When giving flows from love and gratitude, sacrifice no longer feels burdensome but becomes a privilege and an opportunity to bless others. Cheerful giving also requires trust, believing that God will continue to provide even after we have given. 2 Corinthians 9:7, “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver”.
10. The Test of Self-Control: God will test our self-control (egkrateia in Greek), not merely as human willpower but as a spiritual discipline and evidence of transformation. This test examines our responses when doing the right thing comes at personal cost and tests our integrity when no one is watching. It also evaluates how we handle early victories, spiritual gifts, authority and new blessings without losing humility. God assesses whether we can carry elevated status without becoming proud or self-sufficient. The key to passing this test is refusing immediate gratification in favour of a greater reward, relying upon the grace of God to subdue the flesh. Proverbs 25:28, “A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.”.
11. The Test of Patience (The Time Test): Waiting for a promise to manifest purifies motives, cures impatience and tests genuine faith. During this test, we may pray and receive no immediate answer, forcing our faith to rely on God’s character rather than His immediate responses. This season requires steadfastness in the face of delayed promises and prolonged waiting. The key to passing this test is persistence in prayer and tarrying in God’s presence without giving up until He answers. James 1:3-4, “Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing”.
12. The Test of Purity and Motivation (The Motivation Test): This test exposes the motives of the heart to ensure that we seek the Giver and His Kingdom rather than personal glory, platforms or wealth. It requires financial and material integrity, proving that worldly gain does not dictate our obedience to God. We must guard our hearts against bitterness, keep short accounts of wrongs and actively pray for those who have hurt or misjudged us. Bitterness anchors us to the wilderness, but forgiveness releases us into elevation. Hurt and betrayal by leaders, mentors or close friends may become the means by which God tests our hearts. Proverbs 16:12”. Also, in Proverbs 17:13, “Fire tests the purity of silver and gold, but the Lord tests the heart”.
God bless you!
