If you are asked to define yourself, what would you say? That is a crucial question, and your answer to that question is even more significant. No two people are the same, not even if they are twins or triplets. The reason for this, is because we are all individuals and we possess unique qualities that makes us different from one another. It is not healthy to wish we were someone else, however, we can aim to be like them, especially if they inspire us positively. Firstly, we must understand that the way we see ourselves matters greatly, because what we believe about ourselves, will either make or break us. Our views of ourselves will portray and define who we are; and if we accept our views of us, we will live out our lives from that view point. Someone who sees himself/ herself in a negative manner, will act negatively, and if he/ she sees themselves in a positive manner, he/ she will in like manner act positively. In other words, we will conform to who we believe and accept that we are.
A typical example would be a lion’s cub, if the cub grows up with bears rather that with other lions; it will believe that it is a bear and will act like a bear, even though it does not look like a bear. We are likely to be addressed based on how we portray ourselves before others. Our view of ourselves, may my not necessarily be how other people see us, but it can certainly affect what they think and how they behave towards us. So, with this truth in mind, we have to learn to see, believe and speak the right things about ourselves, because if we do not, it will go on to negatively affect our lives, other people and the way we live. We have to refuse to allow anything or any situation that we may be faced with, define who we are especially at the moment of our weakness.
As a child of God, ask yourself, who does God say that I am? When we choose to accept what the word of God says about us as His dearly beloved children, we will walk in the consciousness that we are kings and queens. The bible reminds us that as Jesus Christ is, so are we in this world, “1 JOHN 4:17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the Day of Judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world”. As children of Light, we have to bluntly refuse to allow anyone, anything or situation define who we are; we are made in the image and likeness of God Himself, therefore we must choose to believe that we are beautiful and purposeful.
God did not make a mistake by creating us; however, we bear the responsibility to see ourselves the way God sees us. What matters the most, is God’s view point of us. Psalm 139:14-16, says “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knows right well. My substance was not hidden from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. Galatians 2:20 says also that “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
We have to be careful that we do not have a negative belief of ourselves, because it will lead us to confess unfruitful things about us; and this can affect our lives negatively, as our confessions are powerful whether good or bad. When we confess the right things in our lives, we activate the power of God’s word to take effects in every areas of our lives. Again, our words can either vindicate or condemn us. The devil is always in the lookout for ways that he could trap the children of God, therefore, we must be cautious not be ensnared by our beliefs, confessions and actions. Proverbs 6:2 says “You are trapped by the words of your mouth. You are ensnared with the words of your mouth. Our view of ourselves, will lead us to make confessions, and these confessions, will leads to our actions and our actions will either enslave or save us. Remember always, that our view of ourselves is subject to change, but who we really are in Christ is not.
We do not have to pretend to be who we are not, as that would be unhealthy for us, but we have to draw strength from who God says that we are, in spite of our circumstances. The devil will always throw his wicked and condemning shots at us as children of God, but we have to resist him, by believing and therefore declaring what God’s word says concerning us and our situations. God is not slack to fulfilling His words and promises to us; He is forever true and faithful. One major way to know who we are, so that we may see and act in that manner, is reading the bible; this will shed light to who we are in Christ. We must love ourselves in a healthy manner, because we are deeply loved and cherished by a loving KING! 1 John 4:19 tells us that “we love because He (Jesus) first loved us”.
How can the way we see ourselves affect us?

20. We know that all things work together for our good “Romans 8:28”.
21. We are God’s vessel of honour “2 Timothy 2:21”.
In conclusion, we as children of God, must be resilient to the accuser of the brethren, life’s challenges, difficult situations and our negative mindsets. We must learn to conform to what God says about us, rather than what we think or believe that others think about us. At the end, what truly matters is that we ensure that we are pleasing to God in every way and that we have His Holy Spirit in us as our seal for the day of redemption (the Rapture). Remember always, that only God has the right to judge us, therefore, His approval is key to the success of our Christian living.
