We should take caution when it comes to what we wish for our enemies, especially when they have not done anything wrong to us. Many times, we act out in anger and strife, which can influence how we respond to our enemies. The truth remains that if we are children of God, our battles are not ours, but the Lord’s. When we abide by the commands and laws of God, we enable Him take over all our battles, because He cares dearly for His obedient children, who are called by His name. God goes before us, and He fights for us and through us, because He will never leave nor forsake us no matter what we are encountering. 2 Chronicles 20: 15, “He said: “Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the Lord says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.
We must remember always that we are precious to God in every way, hence the reason the bible calls us the apples of God’s eye. No matter who or what challenges us as children of God, God is always looking out for us. Psalm 91 reminds us that God has given His angels charge over us, and they will continue to protect us when we need help. The secret in fighting our enemies, relies truly on us knowing and vividly understanding that our battles are not ours but God’s opportunity to demonstrate His divine power, love and grace upon us. Proverbs 24: 17-18, Rejoice not when thine enemy falls, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbles: Lest the Lord see it, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him.
When we wish our enemies evil or fight them by ourselves, we do not leave room for God to act on our behalf. The best weapons that we possess as children of God against all the fiery darts of our enemies, is Agape love and the word of God. 2 Corinthians 10:4-5, “The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. When we utilise these weapons against our enemies, we are demonstrating the love of God and fulfilling the commands of God to us. Then, God sees our obedience despite the enemy’s attack and is pleased that we are obedient to His laws to us. This inspires God to act quickly on our behalf, by coming against the enemies who come against us. We must understand that as children of God, our friends are friends to God, and our enemies are enemies to God.
We have to be armed with the knowledge that when we wish our enemies evil, it is dangerous, and it does not produce the righteousness of God in us. When Jesus was persecuted and crucified for our sins, He asked the Father God to forgive His enemies, and He demonstrated His love and word on the cross. Luke 23:34, “Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
We can clearly see in the bible, what David said to Nathan, when Nathan approached him with the word of the Lord. In this passage, David was not thinking well of his adversary, but he spoke what he would do to his adversary, not realising that Nathan was referring to him, and not David’s adversary. 2 Samuel 12:1-13, “The Lord sent Nathan to David. When he came to him, he said, “There were two men in a certain town, one rich and the other poor. The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle, but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food, drank from his cup and even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him. “Now a traveller came to the rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveller who had come to him. Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared it for the one who had come to him.” David burned with anger against the man and said to Nathan, “As surely as the Lord lives, the man who did this must die! He must pay for that lamb four times over, because he did such a thing and had no pity.” Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man! This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul. I gave your master’s house to you, and your master’s wives into your arms. I gave you all Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more. Why did you despise the word of the Lord by doing what is evil in his eyes? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own. You killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.’ “This is what the Lord says: ‘Out of your own household I am going to bring calamity on you. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to one who is close to you, and he will sleep with your wives in broad daylight. You did it in secret, but I will do this thing in broad daylight before all Israel.’” Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.”
Also, in the bible, we see how Haman despised Modicaiah, to the point that he prepared a gallon for him, even though Modicaiah did nothing to him to warrant his hatred and judgement. In this passage, Haman was condemned because of his evil desires and plans against Modicaiah. Modicaiah was vindicated and justified because of the purity of his heart. Esther 7:9-10, “Now Harbonah, one of the eunuchs, said to the king, “Look! The gallows, fifty cubits high, which Haman made for Mordecai, who spoke good on the king’s behalf, is standing at the house of Haman.” Then the king said, “Hang him on it!” So, they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then the king’s wrath subsided.
Reasons why we should not wish evil on our enemies
1. It is not in accordance with the word of God. “Ephesians 4:32”
2. It does not demonstrate the character of Jesus Christ in us. “Ephesians 5:1”
3. It is dangerous and unhealthy for us to do so. “Acts 8:23”
4. It does not demonstrate Agape love. “2 Corinthians 5:14”
5. It takes our focus off God and His word. “Proverbs 4:22”
6. We are consciously and unconsciously empowering the devil. “Ephesians 4:26-27”
7. It is a deterrent to our blessings. “Psalms 34:8”
Having, and allowing God to fight all our battles for us as Believers in Christ, is vital because it demonstrates that we vividly trust in God’s power, word, timing, love, grace and protection. God does not need our help to fight any battle, however, it is wisdom for us to cast all our cares, burdens, battles, grievance, pains and challenges to Him, because God is always seeking out opportunities for Him to prove Himself faithful and strong in our lives, our challenging situations, and to our hateful enemies. 1 Samuel 17:47, “All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”
