Dealing with Challenges – by Benny Shobo

Reading Time: 2 minutes

There will always be periods where it feels like we are going through the worst time of our lives, where we feel like we are drowning and do not know what to do. Those times are truly times of anguish, fear, frustration, confusion and challenging.

One thing you need to realise and understand firstly, is that you are not the only one faced with challenges or experiencing trialling times. In most cases, these trialling periods although difficult, are temporary and will be resolved with time. In other words, allow time to do its work. Most challenges work on your behalf, that is, it will help you deal with issues that you have neglected or did not know that you had. They will bring you to the point in your life where you must draw on your skills, strength, knowledge and resilience within you. They will cause you to ponder and address issues from another perspective other than what you are used to.

I am sure that you have heard this popular phrase, “Tough times do not last but tough people do”. During your challenging time, you will learn to know more about yourself, your strengths, weaknesses,  and abilities. It is a time when you are not distracted from yourself with what goes on daily, but you are now fully focused on your actions, decisions and thoughts, also why you do what you do. It is a time of refining and defining for you.

There are many benefits to challenges, even though it may not appear so at the time. They are as follows:

1. It brings your attention to what really matters.

2. It brings self-examination and clarity.

3. You will become more conscious of your words and actions, and how they affect not only you but others also.

4. You will learn to see things from other people’s viewpoint.

5. It will bring out the best in you.

6. You will discover the level of your strengths and weaknesses.

7. It will teach you the importance having patience.

8. It will define the true intentions of those around you.

9. It is working for your good.

10. You will mature from your experience.

When you are having a challenging time, it is crucial that you have the right attitude otherwise, you will sink rather than swim. You must bear in mind that regardless of the circumstances you are facing,  you can learn to be a better person and be in a better place. Allow the challenges to steer you in the right direction, by refusing to see it as a negative thing. Although, it is a difficult time, choose to make the best of the situation by having a positive and fighting attitude.

Whatever lessons the challenges bring, learn from it and use the knowledge gained to help yourself and others in the future. Endeavour to meet every challenge with strength and not weakness, with a positive and not negative attitude, with courage and nor fear. Remember always, that it will work itself out somehow.
