How to Renew Our Minds – Benny Shobo

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Our minds are battlefields that need renewing constantly with the word of God. To Renew our minds simply means that we are transforming the way we think, feel and choose from an unedifying and unhealthy manner to an edifying and healthy manner through the word of God and by the power of the Holy Spirit in us. This is a process which can sometimes be painful, humbling and rewarding for all of us. Romans 12:2 “Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is —his good, pleasing and perfect will”.

The Bible is our manual for renewing our minds. Our minds can be undoubtedly stubborn, but the word of God triumphs over it always. Especially when we diligently meditate and apply the word of God with faith through the knowledge of God’s word. The way to do that, is to focus on Heavenly things rather than earthly things. We must also consciously train our minds to obey the word of God. 2 Corinthians 10:5, “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.
Our minds will absorb anything that we feed it, whether positive or negative, good or bad and fruitful or unfruitful. Therefore, it is crucial that we feed our minds with only the things that pertain to life and godliness by the power of the Holy Spirit and with the word of God. Proverbs 4:23, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” We must bear in mind that it is expedient that our minds undergo this persistent and positive transformation because it will determine the condition of our souls, our relationship with God and how we stand in faith with the word of God. If our minds are corrupt, it will corrupt our whole being, but if it is not corrupt, it will shed light through our entire being. Romans 8:6, “The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.”

The Disciples of Jesus are a great example of those who renewed their minds with the help of Jesus (the Word) and the Holy Spirit. Although they came to Jesus with little or no knowledge of who He is, but as time went by and they spent quality time with Jesus, their minds were transformed and so did their lives. We too as Children of God must willingly endeavour to train our minds to become like the mind of Jesus. 1 Corinthians 2:16, “For, “Who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.
