The Power of The Spoken Word – by Benny Shobo

Reading Time: 7 minutes

There is power in the words that we utter from our mouths. These spoken words can either build, edify or destroy, make, shape or break, and give relief or burden. Therefore, when we speak the words and promises of God with our mouths, we give birth to good seeds. And like all seeds, they will germinate and grow. The bible reminds us that as the Lord is, so are we in this world (1 John 4:17). This means that as God spoke words of life to form the earth, we too as His children have the same power with our words.  We have to be very conscious of the vivid power of the spoken word, in other to successfully live a fruitful and victorious Christian life. The words that comes out of our mouth are recorded and we will give God account of every word that is spoken out of our mouths. When God created the earth in Genesis the bible records that He trusted His creation and gave him power. Genesis 1:26, “Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground”. But His creation did not appreciate, understand or recognise the significance and magnitude of power transferred unto him: therefore, man willingly relinquished that power to the devil, through its deceit.

However, Jesus came, and through His birth, death, burial, resurrection and glorification, He restored man unto God. Colossians 1:20, “and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross”. Had they known, they would not have crucified Him, 1 Corinthians 2:8, “None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory”. Now that we have been reconciled unto God through the Redeeming Blood of Jesus, we can now boldly speak with the backing of the power of God. The words that we speak, the bible tells us, that they are spirit and life, John 6:63, “The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you-they are full of the Spirit and life”. Also, we see in the bible many times how God spoke His word, and His word went on to accomplish all that He said. Psalms 107:20, “He sent out his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave“. Being armed with this truth, let us now speak words of life and not death to ourselves, situations, family, friends etc.

In Acts 19, the bible reminds us that the words that we speak grows either in a healthy or unhealthy way. Acts 19:20, “In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power. Words are gifts from God to us, but just like with any gift, it can be mis-used or cherished. Our word defines us, and when we speak them into being, things will happen; and this is down to the fact that we carry power on the inside of us. The spoken word of God, is one of our effective weapons and brutal force against the enemy. That is the reason he first attack our minds, in order to distract us from speaking words that edifies and saves us. When we speak God’s word in faith, it activates the dynamic power of God into effect.

One major point to note is this, that although we speak the word of God into action, it is not our responsibility to bring that word to pass; that is the sole responsibility of God Himself. That being said, this should not deter us from speaking His word in faith. When we speak His word, God responds to us because He is His word and His word is Him. All we have to do as His children, is to exercise faith, proclaim and hold unto His word and promises.

One major way which the Lord Jesus, rebuked the devil, was through the power of the spoken word. When satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness three times, the bible records that three times, Jesus used the spoken word of God, to deflate, rebuke and conquer the devil. We can also remember the time when Jesus sent our the seventy- two disciples to preach His word with power; He gave them nothing but the power of the spoken word to go with them. That illustrates how powerful the spoken word is because it is creativity. The spoken word, If used the right way and with faith, will change any life, circumstances, situations, relationship and conditions of a believer for good. We are completely responsible for the words that we speak, but we in no way bear responsibility for the words spoken by other people. However, we do also have the power to reject or receive these words that are spoken unto us, especially if they are negative or contrary to God’s word and promises for us. Ephesians 4:19 “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear“.

Our thoughts are not our words, and should not be treated as such or compared with. However, although our thoughts give birth to the contents of the words that we speak, our words have predominance over our thoughts. It is crucial to understand that although our thoughts influences the words that we speak, our words can work in contrary to our thoughts, thereby in the long run correct our thoughts if negative.

A person who abides by the words he speaks, is considered a man of honour and of good character. Hence the reason the bible tells us that a good name is better than sacrifice; this is because in speaking and honouring our spoken words, we are considered honourable; and earns us a good name, Proverbs 22:1, “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold”. We have to consciously develop our minds to cling unto good and healthy things, which will aid us in speaking choicest, positive and life-giving utterances. Proverbs 18:21 “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

I vividly remember one incident that occurred in 2016 when I was in danger. I was being attacked by someone who was once close to me, and while she kept on hitting me, I clearly heard the Holy Spirit telling me to ask for help. I muttered out these words “Lord help me”!!! Immediately, my attacker who was on top of me, suddenly gave out a loud cry, and fell to the ground powerless. It was like she was hit by an invisible force. Psalm 91:11, “For He shall give His angels charge over you”. Then something even more amazing happened. I was supernaturally endued with power in the inside, just like Samson in the bible, and I overpowered my attacker. I was now the one on top of her and I subdued her. She then began to plead with me to come off her. That experience amazed me tremendously, because I saw the power of God working for me, because I spoke a word. Judges 16:28-30, “Then Samson prayed to the Lord, “Sovereign Lord, remember me. Please, God, strengthen me just once more, and let me with one blow get revenge on the Philistines for my two eyes.” Then Samson reached toward the two central pillars on which the temple stood. Bracing himself against them, his right hand on the one and his left hand on the other, Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines!” Then he pushed with all his might, and down came the temple on the rulers and all the people in it. Thus he killed many more when he died than while he lived”.

Also, in 2001 when my daughter was born, she was only about a couple of weeks old. Early one morning, I woke up due to the sound of struggle I heard coming from my daughter in her baby basket. I jumped up, took a look at her and found that she was struggling to breathe. She had whitish liquid substance all over her nose and mouth, and she was turning blue. I grabbed her quickly and was confused as to what to do. As I panicked, I heard the Holy Spirit speak to me. He said, “command her to sneeze”. I heard it so clearly, and I looked at my daughter and commanded her to sneeze. This was the exact words that I spoke to her, ” Alicia sneeze”. Instantly, my baby girl gave the biggest sneeze of her life. And when she did, more of the white substance poured out of her nose and mouth. Gradually, I watched as my daughter regained her colour. She then proceeded to smile at me. I took her to the Hospital and the doctor examined her, and said she was in perfect health. Praise God!!!

You see, until you experience the power of God in a might way like I did, you may not fully grasped the wonder working power of the spoken word.  Remember what the bible says about how God spoke the words that be not as though there are; and these things transpired in the physical. Our words are spiritual and once it is spoken it will manifest in the physical, because the spiritual gives birth to the physical. Sometimes, it manifests immediately and at other times it may take time; but the truth, is it will manifest.

Reasons Why Our Words Carry Power

1. We have power in the inside of us, which comes out when we speak.

Acts 1:8, “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth”.

2. Our words are alive and living.

Hebrews 4:12, “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart”.

3. Our words are gifts from God.

Matthew 10:9, ” But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say”.

4. Our words are seeds and they will germinate and grow.

Acts 19:20, “In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power”.

5. Our words are our weapons.

Proverbs 18:21 “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

6. Our words represents who we are.

Proverbs 23:7, “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he”.

7. They are recorded and are accountable.

Matthew 12:36, “But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken”.
