To serve God, is to honour, love, obey and live for Him. It involves us surrendering all that we are and have to Him wholeheartedly, in not only somethings, but in everything. This includes ourselves, possessions, will and lifestyles. For us to faithfully serve God, we need to know Him and His word. Everything that we do as children of God, which gives complete glory to Him and not ourselves, is service to God. Our services to God involve anything that we do to increase His Kingdom, and in obedience to His will for our lives. Faithful service to God involves us making God’s word become perfect law to us.
To serve God faithfully, means that we have die to self, the world and our desires; in order for God to occupy us and shine through us. One who serves the Lord faithfully, has truly experienced God, His love and His power to the extent that he/she becomes a willing disciple of Jesus Christ. As disciples of Jesus, we have to demonstrate His attributes, characters, beliefs and love in everything. “Galatians 2:20 I was crucified with Jesus, never the less I live, yet it is no longer I who lives, but Christ that lives in me. The life that I now live, I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me”. This scriptural verse, best illustrates what it means to serve God faithfully.
For us to faithfully serve God, we have to know His will for us and purpose for our lives. When we know and walk in His perfect will, God will give shape and meaning to our lives. The ones who choose to serve God faithfully, will not seek after what God can do for them, instead what they can do for God. God becomes the centre of his/ her world.
When we serve God faithfully, He will love, cherish, prosper, protect and guide you. God will have no secrets from those that love and serve Him wholeheartedly, in fact, He will reveal truths to us. “Deuteronomy 29:29 The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever; that we may follow all the words of His Laws”. God will cause His face to shine brightly upon us when our ways are pleasing to Him. As children of God, we serve God because we love Him dearly and are grateful for His grace, love, mercy, peace, provision, protection, faithfulness etc. When we serve God faithfully in all things, God will serenade us with His Holy Spirit and power. He will fill us with His peace and joy, and make us giants in our generation.
For us to faithfully serve God, we have to be faithful and diligent in all things whether big or little. We must bear the consciousness that God has called us to do all things with the spirit of excellence. Our attitude plays a crucial role when it comes to our services to God. We have to develop an attitude of joy in all things. Serving God with the right attitude is the key to our fulfilment and prosperity. We should never get overly familiar with serving God, because it will lead us to many hinderance and negatively affect our walk with God. We have to serve God with great reverence and complete obedience in every area of our lives. We should not confuse the love of God with the fear of God, because while the love of God causes us to want to have fellowship with Him, the fear of God on the other hand, will guide us into serving God in the appropriate manner. The bible reminds us in Nehemiah 8:10, that the joy of the Lord is our strength; and it is through this strength that we can faithfully serve the Lord in spirit and in truth.
We can serve God effectively through using our gifts and talents. He gave us these talents to enable us serve Him, His church and our brethren adequately. We have to develop the consciousness that whatever we do to serve God, we must do it in the spirit of worship to Him. One major way which the Lord blesses us when we serve Him faithfully, is through blessing us with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. These gifts will enable us excel in every good way, when we dedicate our lives to serving God completely and with the right attitude.
Ways That We Can Serve God faithfully
1. Through our worship.
2. Effective prayer.
3. Complete obedience to His word.
4. The act of giving.
5. Preaching the Gospel.
6. Executing His work diligently.
7. Total trust- faith in Him.
We can never adequately serve God by our might or by our power, but by His Spirit, “Zachariah 4:6”. God gives us the grace to carry out His work effectively, through His Spirit that is in us. His Spirit energies our spirits to function in the spirit of excellence in all things that pertains to life and godliness. God is a faithful leader and as His followers, we have to be meticulous and diligent when serving Him. Remember always, that all the glory, honour and praise must go to the Lord God Almighty.
