When God Says No – by Benny Shobo

Reading Time: 4 minutes

There are times when we seek God’s response about what we need from Him, but we are not fully prepared for the answer that we receive from Him. When God says no, you can be rest assured that His word is final, therefore, it is pure foolishness to attempt to change it. You have to bear in mind that God is always working on your behalf for your good, and that He knows the end from the beginning, the reason for everything, from when we were born until we depart from the earth. One of God’s greatest attributes, is that He completes everything that He starts. “Philippians 1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you, will carry it until the day of completion”.

Every time and not seldomly, when the Lord refuses our requests to Him, it is because He has a valid and strong reason. However, it may not appear so to us at the time, but God says no to us because He sees clearly beyond our capabilities. God answers to nobody because He alone is the Divine Absolute Infinite God, therefore His response to us is justified, appropriate and vindicated.

A very good example of a situation where we ask God for something and He responds by saying no, is best illustrated in the story below:

There was a man named William, he was an evangelist who went from one town to another on public transports, preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to the unsaved. William knew other preachers in his town who had nice cars and he thought to himself, I need a car to aid me in reaching further towns to preach. So, that evening when he got home, he went on his knees and asked God to give him a car. William was very specific about the brand and model, he asked for a Mercedes Benz A class. Now, bear in mind that William’s requests to God seemed valid, but remember that God is not moved by our sentiments. William prayed persistently for months for God to give him his car, but he constantly heard the same reply from God, saying no! After six months of constantly prayer to God about his car, William became frustrated and bitter towards God. Gradually. He began to pray less, praise God less, read less of the bible and he refused to visit any more towns to preach God’s word.

Then one fateful night, on the seventh month since William requested the car from the Lord, God visited William in a dream, revealing many things to him. In the dream, the Lord granted William’s request for a new car. He received his specified car and was very happy, but three days later while he was driving, he has a horrific accident and he lost the use of both his limbs. He cried profusely to God and he regretted asking God for the car. Then, God said to him, William I knew what would happen to you if I gave you this car, hence the reason I refused to grant your request. The Lord continued, you see William, when you thought I did not answer your prayer, I did by not giving you the car, I knew how much pain it would cause you.

William woke up from the dream and jumped out of his bed, he knelt down and asked God to forgive his errors. He sincerely repented from his actions and thanked the Lord for saving him from the unforeseen pain which he would have had to endure because of the car. Seven days later, four elders from a neighbouring town where he often preached knocked on William’s door, when he answered the door, he was astonished to see these elders, however, he welcomed them to his home. The elders related to William that about seven months ago, God placed it in their hearts to buy him a new car. They further explained that it has taken the whole town the last seven months to contribute and buy a car for him.

William could hardly believe what he heard, but they led him out of his house and he was presented with a new car. He leaped with joy and cried profusely, he thanked them and he blessed God for His love, favour and faithfulness. The car that William received however, was not his desired Mercedes Benz, but a Toyota and he cared less about what he initially requested for. William was very pleased with is brand new car and he went about doing the Lord’s work with joy.

Just like William, most of us want what we want now, rather than putting our trust in God because He knows best, and He desires only the best for us. From our perspectives, it may seem like God has refused to answer our prayers, but to God, He is protecting and ensuring that we are ready to receive what we asked for. One major issue that we encounter whenever we ask God for anything, is the issue of our lack of patience. Patience is extremely vital when it concerns our requests to God, He detests impatience and this will cause us to miss out on God’s best for us.” Philippians 4:6 “Do not be anxious about nothing, but in everything by prayer, supplication and thanksgiving, let your requests be made unto God”.

Reasons why God says No to us

1. He sees the effects our request will have on us.

2. He wants to teach us the value of patience.

3. He wants to separate our needs from our wants.

4. He wants to prepare and place us in a position where we can enjoy His gifts to us.

5. He wants us to know that He is always in control of everything and everyone.

6. He wants us to get used to the world “No”, rather than “yes” all the time.

7. He will use the opportunity to train and equip you for the next phase of your life.

In conclusion, henceforth if God says no to us, we should take some time out to seek His face in prayers, and we must be willing to accept his verdict every time. Not everything we ask God for is beneficial to us and we must learn to exercise patience, so that He can carry out His perfect will in our lives. God is ever so good, He promised us that if we ask anything in His name and according to His will. , He hears us and that He shall supply all our needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Jeremiah33:3, Psalm 91:15 and Philippians 4:19.
